Literally, at the Border

In September as part of the Global Mala Yoga Project, I was invited to attend a gathering for yoga students and friends at the US-Mexican border. This event was sponsored by the Border Meet Up Group as part of their regular programs.  The yoga class, shared through the fence, was intended to bring awareness of border issues and to help establish friendships among yoga students in both countries. My friend, Fergal O`Doherty, brought in the Irish influence to our multinational experience.

Increasing awareness of who and what we are at the level of “Pure Being” is one intention of yoga practice. This level of “Being” is shared by all, irregardless of nationality, gender, religion, or sexual orientation. Yoga is a very pertinent technique to help us experience this state of “Being” or to help break through the “borders” of our limiting personal beliefs.

It was a lovely multi-cultural sharing! Muchas gracias to the organizers and participants of this special event. For more information on upcoming Border Meet Up events go to www.bordermeetup.org

Yoga Teacher Training in Tijuana

Since October 2007 I have been working with a group of Mexican students in the hopes of providing more Spanish speaking yoga teachers for Tijuana. Tijuana has a population similar to that of San Diego, with a large middle income sector, and very few yoga classes available (mostly in health clubs). On Sunday mornings through April of 2008 we are offering free classes to the public as an opportunity for the Teacher Trainees to get teaching experience in preparation for certification. Thus far the classes have been very popular, close to maximum capacity!

I am thrilled to have this chance to work south of the border and very excited by the response. Thanks to David Alonzo for the use of his beautiful facility at the Tijuana Aikikai, Aikido studio, in Colonia Cacho ( a Tijuana neighborhood). I invite any interested students to participate in these classes. American students, be aware of the current passport requirements, and plan time for the border crossing when returning to San Diego.
